Here is how you can help support the research that goes into this web site, and come away with a nice buffalo horn powder horn.  The horns are carved with rings and octagonal flats and rubbed to a semi-gloss finish.  These horns generally measure from 10-12 inches around the outside curve from the end of the butte plug to the tip of the horn.

These horns are priced at $95 plus actual shipping costs.  A strap is not included.  Currently two are available.

The horns are made by Michael Schaubs out of Littleton, Colorado, although much of the work on the horns is actually done at public education events.  Michael has found that horn making is a great way to break the ice with many folks and get a conversation going.  To contact us for more information by email click here.  Otherwise Michael can be reached at:

7577 Parkview Mountain

Littleton, Colorado 80127

Proceeds from sales are used to purchase historical books and other research materials related to the fur trade.  Books and documents currently on my list to acquire include;  Joe Meek: River of the West, Lewis Garrard: Wah-To-Yah and the Taos Trail, Josiah Gregg: Commerce of the Prairie, and Ashley-Smith Explorations & Discovery of a Central Route to the Pacific 1822-1829,  Prairie and Mountain Sketches by Matt Field 1843.

If you like the horn but can't afford it, making your own is simple enough.  With a set of files and rasps and a few basic woodworking tools you craft a very similar horn in 20 to 25 hours.  I can provide you with a raw buffalo horn for $6.00 plus actual shipping costs.  See the section on Making a Powder Horn.
